Antwerp

Antwerp - Antwerpen - Anvers

Antwerp is the city of Rubens, diamond, culture, fashion, water and gastronomy

Antwerp is the second largest city of Belgium, after Brussels, and contains 500.000 inhabitants. It is located at the River Schelde and it is the second largest harbor of Europe, after Rotterdam. This is why water is one of the important objects. The gastronomy is just like in Brussels very good and because of the harbour, Antwerp is specialised in mussels. Antwerp is also the city of Rubens, because the past is represented by the numerous paintings of Peter Paul Rubens who lived in the Antwerp of the early 17th century. Antwerp is a cultural city with numerous architectural highlights, most of which date from this and the 16th century, which is called the golden era of Antwerp.

One of these highlights is the Grote markt (“town square”). It is not as big as the 'Grand'Place' of Brussels, but it is certainly as beautiful. The Grote Markt is surrounded by the Town Hall, the houses of the Guilds and a fontain in the middle of the square which you can see on the picture. Just behind the Grote markt the cathedral is located which gives you a nice view from the square. The Town Hall of Antwerp is one of the oldest Renaissance buildings in the Low Countries and was finished in 1564 by architect Cornelis Floris de Vriendt.

Antwerp is also the diamond center of the world, because of the diamond district around the Railway Station, which is the Jewish part of the city. You will be surprised if you see all the stands and stores with diamonds. You can bring your girlfriend to Antwerp, but be careful if you walk out the station. The chance is big that she sees all the glitter and then you know what to buy for Christmas. It costs you a lot of beers, I can tell you.

Also very attractive to girls is the fact that Antwerp is Belgium’s fashion capital. It has earned a place among the fashion cities of the world thanks to the efforts of numerous young Flemish fashion designers. Near the Meir shopping street you can see the fashion area of Antwerp. The Meir is a large avenue which is now free of traffic and invites thousands of people every day to a pleasant shopping stroll in a beautiful historic surrounding. The street contains numerous beautiful historic buildings and runs from Our Lady's Cathedral to Central Station.
